Registration now open for adult education classes
  Register now for one or all of the following adult education classes offered, which begin in September 2008:
  • General Educational Development, class starts Monday, Sept. 15
  • English as a Second Language 1 and 2, class starts Monday, Sept. 8
  • Study Skills with Math & Reading (a College/technical school/ apprenticeship preparation class)

Apply now to have your innovative idea funded by Fostering Innovation Grants - due Sept. 30
  "Getting a Bigger Bang for our Buck"

Do you and your coworkers have big ideas about how to improve efficiency and reduce waste? Are there opportunities to make better use of our resources and improve the services we provide? FIGs can help you make an impact by funding your innovative ideas.

Since 2005, FIGs has awarded $628,127 to support 94 projects around the Health System. This round of FIGs has a budget of $125,000 to be distributed among the most innovative applicants.

The application process is quick and simple; fill out the online application by Tuesday, Sept. 30, and find out within 30 days of the submission deadline if your idea gets the bucks! Applications are available online at www.med.umich.edu/i/fig/application.htm.

Sign up today for the MHealthy Fall Fitness Challenge!
  Register today for the MHealthy Fall Fitness Challenge, a six-week physical activity program designed to get you moving to maintain your current body weight and measurements by exercising at least three days a week for a minimum of 30 minutes each time.

For extra motivation, participants are asked to pay $15 to join. If all program goals are achieved at the end of six weeks, you will be eligible to win great prizes and can choose to have the $15 refunded or donated to the Cancer Survivorship Program for the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center. Fees given by those who do not meet program goals will automatically be donated.

Program success includes staying within two pounds and/or ½ inch or less of pre-program weight or waist circumference, logging activity minutes in the MHealthy Tracker at least five of the six program weeks, meeting the weekly exercise goal, and completing the pre- and post-program surveys.

Register at www.mhealthy.umich.edu by Tuesday, Sept. 23. The program runs Sept. 23 - Nov. 4.

The Hunger Within Workshop at the Cardiovascular Center
  This nationally recognized treatment program provides real hope for life-long weight management by taking the focus off of food and guiding participants through an intensive program to unlock the psychological barriers to permanent weight loss. This step-by-step workshop, taught by Marilyn Migliore, M.S., R.D., A.C.S.W., B.C.D., explores the core reasons for overeating, identifies the triggers that precipitate a binge and helps break the vicious cycle of emotional eating.

Workshops will meet in the CVC 3rd floor Conference Room 3701.

Call for proposals: Center for Computational Medicine and Biology Pilot Research Grant Program
  Deadline: Monday, Oct. 20

The U-M Center for Computational Medicine and Biology announces its Pilot Research Grant Competition for 2008 (FY2009). The goal is to bring together research faculty in different fields (computational/mathematical/statistical/informatics and biological/chemical/clinical/translational) in joint projects that will foster successful future proposals to NIH or other funding agencies. Applications must be submitted by two primary collaborators at U-M, one from each of the two different domains listed above. At least one investigator must be on the roster for the Center for Computational Medicine and Biology affiliate faculty.

A. Alfred Taubman Medical Research Institute - Call for abstracts
  We are seeking abstracts for poster presentations of original research involving stem cells for the first A. Alfred Taubman Medical Research Institute Symposium Tuesday, Oct. 7.

Abstracts of research in basic science, curriculum innovation, clinical outcomes, health services, policy and methodology are welcome. We encourage abstracts describing current works in progress as well as completed studies. There will be three prizes for best abstract presentations: $250, $100 and $75. Criteria are originality of concept, sophistication of methodology and clarity of presentation.

Abstracts should be sent electronically no later than Sept. 30, to June A. Wilson at juneaw@umich.edu.

Sept. 23 - 24: Leather sale fundraiser
  The FRIENDS Gift Shop is sponsoring our Annual Leather Sale Fundraiser from 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23 and Wednesday, Sept. 24 in the Towsley Center Lobby. All monies derived from the sale will go to Trails Edge Camp for ventilator dependent children.

All major credit cards will be accepted. Payroll Deduction is available to employees that meet the requirements. Purchases over $100 will be deducted with four consecutive deductions.

Register for upcoming Restoring Balance: Tools for stress management class
  Stress takes a toll on physical health and well-being, yet there's much you can do to manage stress and approach life with a greater sense of ease and flow. The key is in learning more effective ways to respond to stress. In this six week class participants gain a deeper understanding of what provokes stress, ways of responding and learn a variety of practices, such as meditation, imagery, EFT, journaling, and more, to restore balance. Sept. 12: Change of venue for the 10th Anniversay U-M Integrative Medicine Symposium
  Due to the overwhelming response to the U-M Integrative Medicine 10th Anniversary Symposium to take place from 1 - 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, we are changing the venue to a larger room.

The new venue is the Auditorium in the Biomedical Science Research Building, located at 109 Zina Pitcher Place. The closest parking available is at the structure on Palmer Street next to Palmer Commons.

  Strong Moms, Strong Girls: Promoting Positive Interactions is a free lecture offered by the U-M Center for the Child and the Family that will take place from 7 - 8:30 p.m. Monday,Sept. 22, at Borders Bookstore, 3140 Lohr Rd., Ann Arbor.

Relationships among sisters, and between mothers and daughters, can be both deeply rewarding and rife with jealousy and competition. This session, presented by Orli Avi-Yonah, M.S.W., Ph.D. and Sharon Gold-Steinberg, Ph.D., helps to promote a community of healthy female relationships. Sept. 12: Internal Medicine Grand Rounds
  Edward V. Loftus, Jr., M.D. will present Internal Medicine Grand Rounds at noon Friday, Sept. 12, in Ford Auditorium. Loftus' presentation will be, "Advances in Inflammatory Bowel Disease." Loftus is a professor of Medicine and is the director, Inflammatory Bowel Disease in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.

There will be a "pick up" lunch for those attending grand rounds.

Sept. 8: Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation 'Bank' and T-shirt Day
  A "bank" and t-shirt day will be held for the U-M Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation walk team. Walkers and team captains can turn in money before the walk and collect their team t-shirts if they have raised at least $25 dollars on Monday, Sept. 8, from 10:30 - 11:45 a.m. in room 2C108 University Hospital and from 1 - 2:45 p.m. in room 2G321 University Hospital. Sept. 14: Last chance! Parisian shopping event for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
  The U-M Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk Team will be selling tickets to the Parisian Department Store's annual event to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. This shopping extravaganza will take place from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, at Parisian Department Store at Laurel Park Place, Livonia. Your $10 ticket entitles you to a 20 percent discount off of all store purchases including regular and sale apparel, accessories, fine jewelry, cosmetics and fragrances (with the exception of clearance items).

PF Chang's, Fleming's Steakhouse, Mitchell's Fish Market and several more restaurants from the area will be serving free appetizers and beverages throughout the evening.

New this year - the Detroit Ignition Soccer Team will be there with players and dance team members to sign autographs!

All ticket sale proceeds will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.
