H1N1 flu vaccine update
| |
More H1N1 flu vaccine is arriving at UMHS this week, and so the list of patients and faculty/staff who may now receive the vaccine is able to expand. Here is an updated list of the groups that may now be vaccinated: www.med.umich.edu/u/flu/pdf/factsh1n1.pdf.
If you are a member of one of these groups, please seek vaccination as soon as possible so that we can assess the vaccine supply and determine if there's enough remaining to allow more groups to be added to the list. Injectable vaccine is still in short supply and will be given only to patients, faculty and staff in the groups identified who do not qualify for nasal vaccine, while supplies last.
Please note that Occupational Health will continue to offer H1N1 vaccination to faculty and staff in the qualifying groups on the third floor of the Med Inn from 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

UMHS Child Care Center offers school-age care for elementary-aged children

The UMHS Child Care Center, located at 2601 Glazier Way, is proud to offer school-age care for elementary-aged children again this year. We will offer care on the days when Ann Arbor Public Schools are closed. Information, including registration forms, is now available on our Web site. NIH stimulus awards to U-M Medical School top $47 million
| |
On Thursday, UMHS announced that researchers at the University of Michigan Medical School have received 182 stimulus-package awards totaling nearly $47.5 million from the National Institutes of Health, as of November 1. The grants will enable our scientists and physicians to continue or begin projects that explore innovative approaches to important health issues. The NIH awards, given through a competitive process, are part of the $787 billion federal economic stimulus package known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act or ARRA, approved in February.

Space heaters no longer recommended for purchase
| |
In the interest of safety and environmental sustainability, space heaters are no longer recommended for purchase. This includes the oil filled space heater that was approved for use in non-patient care areas
in the past. For faculty and staff who find the need for additional warmth, Safety Management Services recommends the purchase of workstation warmers, which operate at safer temperatures and use far
less electricity. At this time, staff may continue to use existing oil-filled space heaters. Space heaters and workstation warmers are NOT permitted in patient care areas or in sleeping areas for staff.

Nov. 19: Introduction to MERLOT workshop

This workshop will provide an introduction to the, Multimedia Educational Resources for Learning and Online Teaching repository, called MERLOT. It is a peer-reviewed repository of online resources freely available for use in teaching. Workshop participants will learn how to search for materials, create their own account and create their own collection. The instructor will focus on selections for nurse educators as examples. Individual sessions to target your interest are available by appointment.

Nov. 13: Depression Center Colloquium Series

The Depression Center Colloquium Series will take place at 11:45 a.m. Friday, Nov. 13, in the Rachel Upjohn Building Garden Level Auditorium.
"Predicting Treatment Response for those with Major Depressive Disorder using Neuroimaging Techniques," will be presented by Wayne C. Drevets, M.D., senior investigator, NIMH Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program, and Scott Langenecker, Ph.D., clinical assistant professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of Michigan School of Medicine.

Dec. 1: Getting started with Photoshop
| |
Photoshop is a powerful tool if you know how to use it. In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn the basic features of Photoshop, including how to crop and resize images, select part of one image and add it to another using "layers," add text and apply effects such as a bevel to make an image look like a button.

Nov. 19: Beginning PowerPoint

In the Introductory PowerPoint class, essential elements of PowerPoint will be introduced using a series of hands-on exercises. In two hours you will learn to quickly build and deliver effective presentations, import graphics and excel charts, animate bulleted text, print handouts, build for Web or stand-alone presentations and develop them for a MAC or PC computer. Minimal computer experience is required.

Nov. 17: How to create stunning presentations
| |
This workshop taught by an Apple software specialist, will help participants learn how to effortlessly create stunning presentations, complete with Apple-designed themes, cinema-quality animations, and voice-over narration. Participants will learn to export their presentations in a variety of formats, as a set of image files or as Flash, QuickTime, PowerPoint, HTML or PDF format.

Nov. 12: Introduction to Surveymonkey

Nov. 19: Assert yourself now -- at home, at work and in relationships

Carolyn Lewis-Stone, CEW senior counselor, will lead an interactive workshop, which will address concerns about exhibiting assertive behavior. Participants will experience opportunities to learn and practice being assertive through role play. Participants also will learn how assertive behavior may reduce stress, prevent confusion and calm potentially explosive situations yet still leave everyone with self-esteem intact.

Nov. 14: Free glucose screenings will be offered at the U-M World Diabetes Day Health Fair

Just added! Blood glucose testing will be among the free screenings offered at the U-M Comprehensive Diabetes Center's World Diabetes Day Health Fair on Saturday, Nov. 14, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel in Ann Arbor. Additional free screenings include blood pressure, cholesterol (total and HDL) and body mass/hip-waist ratio for obesity assessment.
For the latest information on diabetes research, prevention and treatment, attendees can speak one-on-one with UMHS clinical and research staff and see displays by medical supply and non-profit companies.
Two lectures will be offered:
- 9:30 a.m. - "Diabetic Foot Care" by Crystal Holmes, DPM, CWS
- 12:30 p.m.- "Planning Healthy Meals" by Cecilia Sauter, MS, RD, CDE

Parking and transportation
Simpson/Mott parking structure project began Nov. 2
| |
The Northeast stairwell at the Simpson/Mott (M22) parking structure was closed for construction repairs starting on Monday, Nov. 2 at 7 a.m. It is scheduled to reopen by the end of day on Wednesday, Nov. 11. The other stairwells and elevators will be open.
