Ronald John Buckanovich, M.D., Ph.D.
Assistant Professor
Specialty: Gynecologic Oncology
Dr. Buckanovich joined the U-M Gynecologic Oncology Clinic in 2006. His clinical interests include clinical trials to prevent ovarian cancer recurrence after successful surgery and chemotherapy to induce complete remission. His laboratory research focuses on a specific type of white blood cells called vascular leukocytes. He is investigating how these cells promote the growth of new blood vessels in tumors and is working to develop new therapies that would interrupt this process, causing the tumor to shrink. In addition, he is trying to develop new strategies for the early screening and diagnosis of ovarian cancer by identifying specific proteins that vascular leukocytes may produce and be detected in the blood of cancer patients. Dr. Buckanovich served for two years as an instructor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania after completing his medical residency and oncology fellowship there. He obtained his Ph.D. at Rockefeller University in 1996 and completed his M.D. at Cornell University Medical College two years later. Dr. Buckanovich is a member of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Gynecologic Oncology Group. He enjoys travel, hiking, running and sports. He also started a book club.
