Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and new onset diabetes after transplantation (NODAT) are two of the most common non-immunological complications in kidney transplant patients. Research of the genetic predisposition of their occurrence will improve our understanding and potentially lead to better preventive strategies, which can result in improvement of post-transplant outcomes.
Long-term transplant outcomes - patient and graft survival - remain inadequate despite advancement in transplant surgery and medicine over the past 2 decades. Epidemiological studies of transplant outcomes, using either national registry data or single center data, are important tools to improve our understanding of the problem, identify risk factors associated with poor clinical outcomes and thus provide rationales for future clinical studies.
