Research Interests:	Systemic lupus erythematosus is characterized by abnormal T cell signal transduction. My focus is to investigate the cause of defective ERK pathway signaling in idiopathic and drug-induced lupus T cells since ERK impairment causes epigenetic changes that result in autoimmunity. Lupus T cells display a decrease in PKCd activity that is directly related to defective ERK pathway signaling. Why this defect occurs is under investigation. It is known that environmental factors contribute to lupus and based on our results the hypothesis is that oxidative stress can modify the structure and function of this key signal. Studies involve signal transduction, transgenic animals and protein structure through mass spectrometry among others.
