The focus of the Wiggins laboratory is the elucidation of mechanisms of glomerular injury leading to End Stage Kidney Disease. The current specific focus is on podocyte biology where we are a major laboratory that has defined the importance of the integrity of the podocyte for normal glomerular development and for preservation of glomerular structure and function. This includes genetic studies conducted to identify new mutations causing nephrotic syndrome and glomerulosclerosis as well as animal model studies in which the process of progression is a major focus. Recent work in press has translated this information to the clinic by developing a novel method for measuring podocyte products in urine as a non-invasive method of monitoring the rate of podocyte loss in experimental models and in man.
