Pediatric Exercise Physiology

The Laboratory for Pediatric Exercise Physiology is located in Room F1339 on the first floor of C.S. Mott Children's Hospital close to the Pediatric Cardiology Clinic and noninvasive laboratories.

Physicians are the only ones who may request an exercise study for a patient.

Study candidates are children (five years of age or older), adolescents and adults with known congenital or acquired heart disease (pre- or post-operative), rhythm disturbance, or suspected cardiovascular disease.

Studies include treadmill (Bruce protocol), six-minute walk and bicycle protocol. During the procedure, the health care team monitors and records symptoms, heart rate, blood pressure, ECG, oxygen consumption and oxygen saturation, at rest and during exercise and recovery.

The unit is staffed by a team of technicians, physicians and nurses who are dedicated to providing excellent and safe studies. A report is completed on each test and provided to the patient's pediatric cardiologist and/or primary care physician. Additional procedures may include pulmonary function studies, echocardiogram or cardiac output measurements. Approved research protocols are performed as requested.
