Pediatric Speech, Language and Feeding/Swallowing Program
The Pediatric Speech, Language and Feeding/Swallowing Program provides comprehensive assessment and treatment of children who experience delay or disorder in speech, language, voice, resonance, communication skills or feeding and swallowing.
Clinical speech-language services include:
- Assessment and treatment of children with speech-language disorders, including evaluation of children with cerebral palsy, autism and congenital syndromes
- Assessment and treatment of children with structural anomalies, including cleft lip and palate
- A multi-disciplinary augmentative alternative/ communication clinic
- Assessment and treatment of children with tracheotomies and/or ventilator-dependence, to ensure effective communication development and options
- Participation in interdisciplinary neurorehabilitation programs for children who have experienced significant brain injury
- Participation in epilepsy surgery, including language-mapping
Speech-Language Pathologists also participate in assessment and treatment of feeding and swallowing disorders. Evaluation may include videofluoroscopic assessment, performed in collaboration with the Department of Radiology, or videoendoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES). Pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders include the following:
- children who demonstrate coughing or choking while eating
- infants with difficulty advancing their diet to include textured foods
- toddlers and older children who are food refusers or picky eaters
- children with poor weight gain or failure to thrive
- children who are transitioning from tube-feeding to oral feeding
- children with other feeding/swallowing difficulties that prohibit them from eating an age-appropriate diet
