Hematology/Oncology - U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center

The Pediatric Hematology Program provides expertise in the diagnosis of anemias, thrombocytopenias, neutropenias, disorders of neutrophil function and immune deficiencies.

The Pediatric Hematology Sickle Cell Program assesses and manages health services for children with sickle cell disease. We offer specific clinics devoted to comprehensive care of children with Sickle Cell disease, and faculty provides expert consultation for the complete care of children with different Sickle Cell syndromes. The program has a multidisciplinary staff that includes social workers, nutritionists and nurse practitioners. We do evaluations and treatments on an outpatient basis.

The Pediatric Hemophilia and Coagulation Disorders Program provides comprehensive, coordinated assessment and management of health services for individuals with complex hemostatic and thrombotic disorders.

The Pediatric Oncology Program provides comprehensive care for children with cancer including leukemia, lymphoma, brain tumors, neuroblastoma and Wilm's tumor. Physicians, nurse practitioners, physiologists and social workers staff the program. Specific Tumor Boards meet twice monthly to discuss comprehensive care of patients who are newly diagnosed with cancer. Pediatric oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologist, pathologists, radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians attend the Tumor Board. The Tumor Board allows for our collective expertise to provide a most thorough, comprehensive approach to the care of children with cancer.

The Pediatric Long-Term Follow-Up Clinic provides comprehensive assessment and evaluation of children and adolescents who have completed treatment for cancer. Patients are transitioned from their primary oncologist to the specialized long-term follow-up team, typically when the patient is at least 3-5 years from completion of active therapy. The team offers expertise in the late effects of therapy and focuses on health promotion and wellness. Clinic services include risk-based screening recommendations and education about potential treatment-related effects. Periodic (usually yearly) evaluations continue in this clinic for varying amounts of time.
