Pharmacy
 

The University of Michigan’s Department of Pharmacy is comprised of a team of highly trained pharmacy technicians, pharmacists and clinical pharmacy specialists who use cutting-edge technologies to assure that medications are being dispensed in a safe and accurate manner.

About our Pediatric Inpatient Pharmacy:

  • We provide services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • We review physician orders for correct drug, dose, route and frequency.
  • We review physician orders for drug-drug interactions, drug-disease interactions and allergy information.
  • We provide drug therapy consultation to medical and clinical staff, as well as individualized drug therapy and education services to patients and families.
  • We provide pharmacokinetic services and our pharmacists respond to all code resuscitations.
  • We can answer detailed drug information questions.
  • Our experts triage all general medication questions for medical and nursing staff, such as safe doses.
  • We compound oral suspensions and prepare all intravenous admixtures, including those used in chemotherapy.
  • We work closely with a multidisciplinary health care team to provide first-rate patient care and customer service.

Our staff features seven pediatric clinical pharmacists, each one dedicated to a different specialty such as: Neonatal Intensive Care, Pediatric Intensive Care, Hematology/Oncology/BMT, Surgery, Infectious Disease, General Pediatrics/Nephrology/Pulmonary, and Anesthesia/Pain.

About our Outpatient Pharmacy:
We are located on the first floor of the main hospital, near the main entrance. We are open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Our phone number is (734) 936-8260.

In addition to the services listed above, our department supports a Drug Information Service that provides pharmaceutical, pharmacological and therapeutic information to health practitioners at the U-M and in the local area. Rapid, clinically applicable information is available to requesters by telephone (734) 936-8200, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

We also educate pharmacy students, interns and pediatric pharmacy residents and have a Medication Safety Officer that participates in patient safety rounds and is a vital part of the Pediatric Medication Committee.
