Teenage and Young Adult Health Program

The Teenage and Young Adult Health Program at the University of Michigan is committed to caring for the specialized health needs of teenagers and young adults. Services are provided respectfully and confidentially by specialists with advanced training in Adolescent Health. Young people or their families may make their own appointments though patients are usually referred by other physicians, school nurses, counselors, or other health care providers.

With physicians trained in both pediatrics and adult internal medicine, the program cares for patients spanning pre-teens to young adults. A full range of services is offered, including preventive health care, care for chronic illnesses and disabilities, evaluation of problems related to growth and development, evaluation of school difficulties and ADHD, care for depression and other emotional difficulties, and evaluation and management of substance abuse. Our physicians are skilled in managing the reproductive health concerns of adolescents including regular examinations, issues related to sexuality, sexually transmitted infections, and birth control. A smooth transition from pediatric to adult health care, particularly for patients with chronic health conditions, is a longstanding focus of the program. Comprehensive multidisciplinary treatment for patients with eating disorders is another area of special expertise. The program treats hundreds of patients with eating disorders each year, enjoys a national reputation for excellence, and is one of the few of its kind in the State of Michigan.

Appointments in the Teenage and Young Adult Health Clinic might seem longer than usual so that our physicians have the opportunity to fully address the many issues that may be concerning for young people. Each patient is given as much time as it takes to fully meet his or her unique needs. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled as needed, and, with your permission, we will communicate regularly with your family doctor. If appropriate, we will also coordinate the efforts of community services, school-based services, and the services of other health care providers to provide seamless care in complex situations.
