Audiology - Cochlear Implant Program
Director: Teresa A. Zwolan, Ph.D., CCC-A
The Cochlear Implant Program offers rehabilitation for individuals with moderate to profound deafness in both ears. The cochlear implant is a surgically implanted electronic device that has the potential to provide patients with speech recognition. The device converts sound waves into electrical impulses that are delivered through an electrode to the auditory nerve. Cochlear implantation has been approved by the FDA for use in adults, in children ages 12 months - 17 years and in adults who lost their hearing at an early age. For almost all patients, the cochlear implant provides significant improvement in environmental sound recognition and improved lip-reading skills. Additionally, most patients (both children and adults) demonstrate hearing-alone speech recognition skills after receiving the device.
U-M's Cochlear Implant Program is one of the largest of its kind in the country. To date, more than 1,300 patients have received a cochlear implant at the University of Michigan. Our department participates in clinical trials to evaluate new devices for use in children and adults. Additionally, a large scale federally funded program of investigation aimed at the development of the next generation of cochlear devices assures that we will remain at the forefront in this area.Appointment Number: 734-998-8119
