Adult Psychiatry - Hospital Consultation Service
Director: David J Knesper, M.D.
The Department of Psychiatry's Hospital Consultation Services responds immediately to requests for consultative assistance for all adults (18 years and over) hospitalized at University of Michigan Hospital and immediately adjacent hospitals such as the Kellogg Eye Center. Training of house officers, medical students and specialty fellows is provided along with the consultation. Psychiatric consultation is practiced within the framework of comprehensive medicine, with attention to the biological, neuropsychiatric, intrapsychic and sociocultural processes that interact to produce illness and influence recovery.
Consultation requests are received from physicians asking for evaluation, diagnosis and recommendations for the management and treatment of their medical and surgical inpatients. These patient contacts involve both rapid and extended evaluations, psychotherapy, crisis intervention, brief individual and conjoint psychotherapy and hypnosis. Emphasis is placed on swift assessment of the physician's request, the patient's problem, the treatment alternatives and, finally, a practical program of treatment. The vast bulk of consultation visits consist of an initial visit and several return visits. Outpatient return visits may be offered.
