Critical Care Medicine
Our 20-bed Critical Care Medicine Unit (CCMU) provides intensive observation and specialized nursing care for all critically ill medical patients who are not candidates for the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. Experts in critical care medicine and nursing provide state-of-the-art ventilation and monitoring facilities.
A number of clinical and research efforts are underway at our clinic. These research studies may prove to be of significant value in treating CCMU patients. The studies include:
- Classifying, evaluating and managing patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)
-
Identifying factors contributing to the development and outcome of ARDS patients
-
Participating in the National Institutes of Health-sponsored ARDS Network study for evaluating the role of different treatment strategies, including pulmonary artery catheter placement, and the role of corticosteroids in the fibrinoproliferative phase
-
Evaluating new ARDS treatments
- Studying the role of new treatments in severe sepsis (infection)
