Biopsies and surgical specimens, appropriately fixed, may be submitted directly to us by attending physicians for processing and diagnosis. Prepared slides, paraffin blocks, or wet tissues may also be sent by pathologists for specialized processing and or consultation. The extremely broad range of sub-specialty expertise immediately available within the Department ensures optimal handling of all types of specimens. The methods of routine light microscopy can be supplemented as necessary by immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, and molecular diagnostics. Small biopsies can be prepared and interpreted by routine light microscopy within one day of receipt. Large specimens may require an extra day of fixation. Special supplemental techniques of analysis may require from one day to one week additional.
