Speech-Language Pathology

Speech-Language Pathologists at the University of Michigan Health System assess and treat children and adults with communication and swallowing disorders. Each member of this department maintains the American Speech Language and Hearing Association's Certificate of Clinical Competence.
Specialty areas include:
- Assessment and treatment of feeding and swallowing disorders, including instrumental (videofluoroscopic and endoscopic) assessment
- Assessment and treatment of voice disorders
- Rehabilitation following head/neck cancer surgery, including speech restoration (e.g., trachesophageal [TE] puncture)
- A multi-disciplinary Augmentative/Alternative Communication Clinic
- Assessment and treatment of children and adults with tracheotomies and/or ventilator-dependence, to ensure effective communication options
- Participation in interdisciplinary neurorehabilitation day-treatment programs for children and adults who have experienced significant brain injury, to make it easier to return to work or school
- Participation in epilepsy surgery, including language mapping
