Gastroenterology Specialty Clinics - Functional Bowel Disorders (FBD)

Director: John W Wiley, M.D.

Functional bowel disorders (FBD) are disorders of the function, rather than the structure, of the gastrointestinal system. These disorders, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional dyspepsia (FD), affect up to 20 percent of the general population.

Both IBS and FD are considered chronic conditions that can lead to significant reductions in quality of life and work productivity. Patients with IBS commonly report lower abdominal pain or discomfort associated with altered bowel habits, either constipation or alternating constipation and diarrhea. Patients with FD typically report upper abdominal or chest pain or discomfort associated with bloating, distension or nausea. In both disorders, underlying structural causes for the symptoms must be excluded before a diagnosis of FBD may be considered.
