Peripheral Nerve Surgery Program
Neurosurgical diseases of the peripheral nerves include peripheral nerve entrapment syndromes (carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar nerve entrapment at the elbow), traumatic injuries to a nerve or nerve plexus, and nerve sheath tumors (schwannoma, neurofibroma). The University of Michigan Peripheral Nerve Surgery Program utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to treat patients with peripheral nerve problems. Patients with peripheral nerve problems may be treated by specialists in neurosurgery, neurology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, oncology, and pain medicine. A special multidisciplinary program has been developed to address injuries and lesions of the brachial plexus, a network of nerves in the neck and shoulder region. Surgeons at the University of Michigan have been nationally recognized both for their work in peripheral nerve surgical techniques and for cutting-edge research in the basic biology of peripheral nerves.
