Craniofacial Anomalies Clinic

The Craniofacial Anomalies Program at the University of Michigan combines the expertise of 21 medical specialties to provide care to children with abnormalities of skull development. Craniosynostosis arises when the sutures of the skull, which arise at the interface of each skull bone with its neighbors and regulate bone growth, seal while the brain and skull are growing. This closure of the suture results in changes to the shape of the skull, the face, the eyes, and other cranial structures. Craniosynostosis may result in increased pressure in the brain, blindness, and developmental delay. Surgery for these conditions occurs in a team environment with both Neurosurgeons and Plastic Surgeons participating together in the performance of surgery.
