Spasticity and Cerebral Palsy Program

Spasticity is an abnormal velocity-dependent increase in muscle tone. In children, spasticity is often a component of cerebral palsy, a group of nonprogressive clinical syndromes that are characterized by motor and postural dysfunction. Children with cerebral palsy may have spasticity in various regions of their bodies, depending upon the specific brain abnormality producing the condition. Less often, spasticity in children may result from stroke, spinal cord injury, or another neurological condition.

The Spasticity and Cerebral Palsy Program combines expertise in the Department of Neurosurgery, the Department of Neurology, and the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation to provide state-of-the-art therapies to patients with these disabling neurological problem. Approaches to spasticity include oral medications, physical therapy, intrathecal baclofen therapy, and occasionally open surgery.
