Acute Care Surgery

Division Chief: Lena Marie Napolitano, M.D.

The Division for Acute Care Surgery is responsible for treating and managing all patients with trauma or burn injuries, other emergency general surgical conditions and some elective general surgery cases. The Division of Acute Care Surgery maintains both the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) in University Hospital, 5th floor and the Trauma Burn Intensive Care Unit in University Hospital, 1st floor, for inpatient care. It also provides consultation and surgical intensive care inside and outside UMHS. Critically ill patients are transported to UMHS via Survival Flight. The Division maintains critical care diagnostic and life-support services, including cardiac-assist devices, continuous arterial venous hemofiltration, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), hemodynamic studies and metabolic studies.

The Division for Acute Care Surgery performs a variety of non-trauma emergency surgical procedures and elective follow-up procedures including reconstructions required on burn patients. Our coordinated team of physicians, nurses, social workers, physical therapists, occupational therapists and dietitians provides comprehensive care and follow-up for the critically ill patient.
