Gene Mutations
BRCA gene mutations are the major cause of genetically linked breast and ovarian cancers. Women with breast cancer at a young age, and family histories of multiple breast, ovarian, prostate and other cancers are a clue to women who might carry mutations in genes. Knowledge of BRCA gene mutation carrier status is vitally important to understand the range of options of management available. Dr. Mark Pearlman, an obstetrician/gynecologist, has been a practicing breast surgeon in the comprehensive breast care center over the past 18 years. His gynecology practice is limited to breast cancer survivors and BRCA gene mutations. The entire array of services necessary to care for these women are available, including consultation with genetic counselors, medical oncologists with specific expertise in BRCA gene mutations, surgical oncologists, and plastic reconstructive surgeons.
