Musculoskeletal Radiology
The Division of Musculoskeletal (MSK) Radiology of the University of Michigan Health System provides a complete spectrum of conventional and state-of-the-art imaging and imaging guided interventional procedures for the musculoskeletal system. In addition to conventional radiography and digital radiography of the bones and joints, the MSK Division performs dynamic fluoroscopic evaluations, conventional tomography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasonography (US) of the musculoskeletal system. For the most comprehensive non-invasive evaluation of joints - often called for in high-caliber athletes - standard arthrography (imaging following injection of radiographic contrast into the joint), CT arthrography and particularly MR arthrography are routinely performed by the MSK Division's five subspecialized radiologists.
MSK radiologists at U-M perform numerous imaging guided biopsies of bones and adjacent soft tissues. Our clinicians find that the precise localization possible with imaging enables accurate and safe procedures while minimizing patient discomfort. Where appropriate, both minimally invasive fine needle aspiration (FNA) and core biopsy techniques are utilized successfully. In addition, joint, cyst and tendon sheath aspirations, as well as diagnostic and theraputic joint injections are performed using fluoroscopic, US or CT guidance.
The MSK Radiology Division is especially fortunate to have radiologists highly accomplished in MSK ultrasonography, performing diagnostic and interventional US procedures of virtually all joints. The shoulder, elbow, wrist, ankle and foot are particularly amenable to this painless procedure. Soft tissue masses, cysts and abcesses also can be detected and, when necessary, biopsied using US.
Finally, faculty members of the MSK Radiology Division can provide consultations for difficult cases or for questions regarding the most effective imaging strategy for particular clinical problems.
