Bladder cancer is the fourth and ninth most common cancer in men and women, respectively. The nature (aggressiveness) of bladder cancer is highly variable, with a spectrum ranging from non-aggressive tumors limited to the lining of the bladder to more aggressive tumors that have the potential to grow through the wall of the bladder and spread to other sites in the body. The presence of bladder cancer may be associated with blood in the urine, urinary symptoms (e.g., frequent urination, burning with urination), abdominal pain and fatigue among other symptoms. The diagnosis and staging (i.e., evaluation of the extent of the cancer) of bladder cancer generally involves multiple tests including one or more of the following: urinalysis, cystoscopy with biopsy and/or removal of obvious tumors, kidney ultrasound, CT scan and/or other x-ray evaluations. Once the extent of the cancer (i.e., the 'stage') has been established, the appropriate treatment option(s) can be determined for individual patients. For any given patient, the treatment will involve initial biopsy and tumor removal followed by some combination of surveillance cystoscopies, surgery and/or chemotherapy (both limited to the bladder and/or delivered to the entire body).
