Minimally Invasive Surgery
Many surgical procedures that were performed through an open incision just a few years ago can be performed today through "keyhole" incisions or with no incision at all. An endoscope or Laparoscope - a narrow telescope through which miniature instruments may be passed - is used to do this type of surgery for:
- Cancerous prostate removal
- Urethral obstruction
- Enlarged prostate
- Urinary tract stones removal
- Partial and complete kidney removal or transplant
J. Stuart Wolf, Jr., M.D., Director of Minimally Invasive Urology, is one of only a handful of urologists with extensive experience in laparoscopic surgery for kidney disease. The Michigan Urology Center has 5 surgeons with advanced experience in endoscopy or laparoscopy, 2 of whom also have great expertise in robotic (da Vinci) assisted surgey. Despite the newness of these surgical techniques, we have built a large team focused on minimally invasive surgery because of the benefits to our patients:
- Shorter hospital stay
- Reduced pain medication
- Minimal recovery period
