Prostate Cancer

Our doctors have a wealth of expertise to offer you when it comes to making the best decision about treating your cancer. We'll explain your options in full detail, because we recognize that's what you need - information. And someone who understands what you are going through. The Multidisciplinary Urologic Oncology Clinic (MDUC) specializes in the detection and treatment of urologic cancers, including those of the prostate, kidneys, bladder and testes. The clinic brings together nationally recognized experts - medical oncologists, urologists, radiation oncologists, and pathologists - as well as nurse practitioners and physician assistants who specialize in urologic oncology. In our clinic, the specialists work side by side so you see every physician necessary in one visit.

At the University of Michigan, we are offering the newest surgical approach for treatment of prostate cancer, the robotic prostatectomy. Performed with the assistance of a surgical robot (da Vinci system), this procedure duplicates the standard open surgical radical retropubic prostatectomy but with smaller incisions. The advantages of robotic prostatectomies are due to the lack of large surgical incision and the excellent magnified vision. These advantages include improved cosmetic result, less blood loss, and briefer and less intense post-operative convalescence. The robotic procedure provides equivalent cancer control and urinary continence when compared to the standard open radical prostatectomy.
