Testicular cancer is most common solid-organ cancer in men between the ages of 15 and 35. One of the major risk factors for the development of testis cancer is a history of an undescended testicle, even if there has been prior corrective surgery. The diagnosis of testis cancer is usually suggested by the presence of a palpable mass in the scrotum and confirmed by a combination of ultrasound and specific blood tests for testicular cancer tumor markers (e.g. alphafetoprotein (AFP) and the beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin (B-HCG). If testicular cancer is diagnosed, the affected testicle is removed as the first step in treatment. Depending on the preference of individual patients, testicular prostheses are available to help maintain scrotal symmetry. Additional testing is also required to determine the extent of the cancer, including, at a minimum, a CT scan and chest x-ray along with follow-up blood work. Based on this evaluation, and the specific type of cancer, treatment will involve additional surgery, radiation and/or chemotherapy. Fortunately, with contemporary treatment approaches, testicular cancer is among the most curable cancers with nearly all men experiencing outstanding long-term survival.
