Amy K. Alderman, M.D., M.P.H.

Faculty Appointment: Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery
Additional Title: Director, Cosmetic Surgery Center
Specialty: Plastic Surgery
Clinical Interests: Dr. Alderman's clinical focus involves working with women with breast deformities resulting from breast cancer. She offers both implant and autogenous tissue reconstructions, including TRAM flap procedures. She also specializes in breast reduction surgery using both the standard wise pattern "anchor" technique along with the vertical reduction that uses a shorter scar. In addition, she performs a wide range of cosmetic surgery, such as breast augmentation, liposuction, abdominoplasty, and facial rejuvenation procedures such as browlifts and facelifts.
Research Interests: Dr. Alderman is currently collaborating with Drs. Steven Katz, Sarah Hawley and Edwin Wilkins from the University of Michigan to examine women's decision-making process for breast reconstruction after mastectomy. The goal of this study is to examine whether unmet need exists in the breast cancer population and determine how to improve the quality of reconstructive services provided to these women. Dr. Alderman is also collaborating with Dr. John Birkmeyer from the University of Michigan to examine epidemiological trends in the national use of breast reconstructive surgery. Their recent article in the Journal of the American Medical Association revealed disparities in the use of breast cancer reconstruction by women's race and geographical treatment location.
