Nicolaas I. Bohnen, M.D.

Faculty Appointment: Associate Professor, Department of Neurology
Associate Professor, Department of Radiology
Specialty: Nuclear Medicine
Research Interests: Research interests include neurochemical and functional brain imaging using PET technique of cholinergic and dopaminergic brain activity in patients with Parkinson's or Alzheimer's disease and in normal elderly. A major objective is to establish clinicometric (motor and olfactory) and PET imaging biomarkers as indices of preclinical or prodromal Parkinson's disease in subjects at risk of these disorders.

Dr. Bohnen also applies acetylcholinesterase PET imaging to study cognitive and behavioral correlates of cholinergic denervation in Parkinson's disease and parkinsonian dementia. He is now in the process of evaluating the functional significance of cholinergic denervation and cognitive impairment by assessing a wide variety of ADL functions in patients with PD.

Dr. Bohnen's geriatric research at the VA involves the study of possible neurobiological mechanisms of falls and mobility impairments in community-dwelling elderly and in patients with Parkinson's disease. He is testing the hypotheses whether executive cognitive impairment, visuospatial inattention and slowing of oculomotor function are risk factor for falls and how these relate to monoaminergic and cholinergic brain activity.
