Employee ID required to enter Mott Birthing Triage area from Simpson St
  Employees are required to have their UMH Employee ID to enter the site via the Mott Birthing Triage guard shack area. Employee's must show the officer on duty at the guard shack their ID to enter. This includes motorcycle, scooter and bicycle riders.

There's even more time to participate in the 1,000 Pitches Contest
  Now there is even more time to participate in the 1000 Pitches Contest. The deadline for submissions has been extended to Oct. 26.

To be entered, submit a short video - three minutes or less - that describes an invention or business idea in one of the following categories:

  • Health
  • High-Tech
  • Social Change
  • Local Business
  • Local Business
  • Green Campus
  • Environmental and Clean Tech

An award of $1,000 will be given for the best "pitch" in each category. The University of Michigan Medical Innovation Center is sponsoring the HEALTH category.

Need help making your video? Consult the contest Web page at www.1000pitches.com. You could also receive assistance from the Medical Innovation Center to transform your idea into reality after the completion of the contest.

Lifestyle Enrichment Action Plan: A morning of cardiovascular health
  The Lifestyle Enrichment Action Plan is a new program aimed at improving health and reducing risk factors for cardiovascular disease. It provides patients with a tailored approach to lifestyle enrichment with specific individualized recommendations. Within one morning at the Preventive Cardiology Services clinic at Domino's Farms, expert staff can provide the following coordinated services:
  • Extensive nutrition consultation, including body fat analysis, analysis of three-day food records and a nutrition prescription
  • Fitness evaluation, including a sub max stress test, strength and flexibility testing, and an extensive exercise consult
  • Stress management consultation, including an assessment and stress reduction plan, and help with overcoming barriers to implementing lifestyle changes
  • Heart healthy snacks
  • A cookbook and pedometer, or relaxation CD

Get your pink moving boxes, raise money for the Breast Cancer Program fund
  During October, Two Men And A Truck of Ann Arbor is selling pink moving boxes in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month; $1 of each will go to the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center Breast Cancer Program Fund. If you are planning a move, or just need some boxes for storage, be sure to ask for pink boxes!

October's GOOD CHOICE of the Month vending machine item: Fig Newtons
  It's easier than ever to make healthier snack choices at Health System and campus vending machines.

Each month, a GOOD CHOICE item is selected and sold at a reduced price of 60 cents. October's GOOD CHOICE of the Month vending machine item is the Fig Newtons. It's a perfect opportunity to try something new!

Michigan Healthy Community's GOOD CHOICE program has selected dozens of healthier food and beverage items, each identified with the GOOD CHOICE logo. MFit nutrition guidelines for fat, sugar, sodium, cholesterol and fiber are used to determine healthier choices in vending machines, at participating dining locations and through U-M Catering.

Connect for Hope Campaign
  Connect for Hope! It's not to late.

Join us in the battle against breast cancer. During the month of October, visit http://connectforhope.kintera.org and register for free as a participant. Create your very own fund-raising site -- upload personal photos, and set your own goal. From your site, you can connect with family and friends to ask them to support the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center Breast Cancer Program.

Seeking interest in a University-wide Epigenetics Group
  The Medical School, in conjunction with the School of Public Health, would like to establish a University-wide Epigenetics Interest Group. The goal of this group will be to facilitate collaborations between group members, provide training for graduate students and fellows, and proivde a forum for investigators to present their work. We are considering a monthly seminar to be held over the lunch hour the first Wednesday of each month with refreshments.

Interested individuals should e-mail their contact information to Cindy Bourke at cindbour@umich.edu. If you know of individuals within your dept/div with an interest in epigenentics, please send their contact information as well.

Nursing Administration has moved
  The offices of Margaret Calarco, Ph.D., senior associate director for Patient Care Services and chief of Nursing Services has moved from the Medical Professional Building to 300 North Ingalls. Also included in this move was the director of Finance, Kathleen Moore and staff; the staff of Nursing Care Excellence; Jean Shlafer, director of Ancillary Care Services and Barbara Wetula, assistant to the chief of Nursing.

Nursing Administration's new mailing address is 300 NIB, Suite 5A, SPC 5446. All phone and fax numbers have remained the same.

Donate your old cell phone in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month
  Don't know what to do with your old cell phone? Donate it so that it can be used as a free emergency phone by a survivor of domestic violence!

Drop-off anytime through Oct. 31, at one of the following two sites: Guest Assistance Program office UH 2B203 (by gift shop) Child Protection Team office in Mott F4770B (the bridge)

All personal data on phones will be completely eliminated and SAFEHouse Center (Washtenaw County's domestic violence and sexual assault service provider) will then distribute them as 911 emergency phones to survivors who need them.

Register for upcoming Restoring Balance: Tools for stress management class
  Stress takes a toll on physical health and well-being, yet there's much you can do to manage stress and approach life with a greater sense of ease and flow. The key is in learning more effective ways to respond to stress. In this six week class, participants gain a deeper understanding of what provokes stress and ways of responding, and learn a variety of practices, such as meditation, imagery, EFT, journaling and more, to restore balance. Instructor: Sandra Finkel, MPH.

Oct. 28: PowerPoint - Beginner
  In the "Introductory PowerPoint" class, essential elements of PowerPoint will be introduced within a series of hands-on exercises. In two hours you will learn to:
  • Quickly build and deliver effective presentations
  • Import graphics, Excel charts
  • Animate bulleted text, print handouts
  • Build for Web or stand-alone presentations
  • Develop for a Mac or PC computer
