Pfizer Lectureship in Sleep will take place at noon Tuesday, Oct. 7, in 2260 Undergraduate Science Building, featuring Allan Pack, M.B., Ch.B., Ph.D., professor of Medicine, director of the Center for Sleep and Respiratory Neurobiolgoy and chief of the Division of Sleep Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Pack will present, "Genomic Approaches to the Study of Sleep."
A dinner seminar will also be offered at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the Michigan Union Pendleton Room, entitled "Public Health Significance of Sleep Deprivation and Sleep Disorders." The Institute for Research on Women and Gender Psychopharmacology and Gender Lecture Series will take place from 2 - 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, in Angel Hall Auditorium B, featuring Giovanna Chesler, director and producer of new media projects and documentary narrative films addressing themes of the body, sexuality and gender. Her most recent documentary, Period: The End of Menstruation has recieved world-wide attention as a central resource on the menstrual suppression debate. Ms. Chesler also works in community-based video education projects teaching feminist media literacy and video production skills to teenage girls.

The Horace W. Davenport Lecture will take place from 3 - 4:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, in Forum Hall, Palmer Commons. For 15 years starting in 1981, James W. Curran, M.D., MPH, directed the Centers for Disease Control's AIDS/HIV epidemiology and prevention efforts, placing him at the global epicenter for awareness, research, treatment and prevention. His talk focuses on the early history of U.S. AIDS/HIV investigations, encompassing the emotionally charged issues of social disapproval and government denial. Curran is the dean of Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health. A reception follows. |

The Health System Tobacco Consultation Service is offering a seven-week Tobacco Treatment Program beginning Tuesday, Oct. 7. Classes meet once a week for seven weeks from 6 - 7:30 p.m. at 2025 Traverwood, Suite A3, in Ann Arbor just off Plymouth Road. The first few sessions are spent preparing to quit, while the last few focus on relapse prevention and stress management. Are you the safety liaison for your area? If so, you are invited to this year's annual safety liaison conference from 12:30 - 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29. The focus will be on how we, as Health System employees, can prevent, prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies that affect our work and home environments. Learn how to develop and practice your own family emergency plans by considering issues like home emergency kits and supplies; family communications plans; and plans for caring for children, the elderly and pets.
There will be two interactive and application-based breakout sessions that focus on specific topics within emergency planning: emergency operations center and concepts in evacuation.

The U-M Psychological Clinic will offer free, confidential mental health screenings for depression, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder to all interested members of the community from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. at East Hall, Suite 2463, 530 Church Street. Individuals have the opportunity to complete a written screening questionnaire, and talk privately for 30 minutes with a mental health professional regarding screening results. The First Annual A. Alfred Taubman Medical Research Institute Symposium "New Frontiers in Stem Cell Therapies" will take place from 2 - 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, in the Biomedical Science Research Building Auditorium. The symposium will feature keynote speaker, James F. Battey Jr., M.D., Ph.D., vice chair, NIH Stem Cell Task Force.
Also speaking will be Eva L. Feldman, M.D., Ph.D., Russell N. DeJong Professor of Neurology and director, A. Alfred Taubman Medical Research Institute; Yehoash Raphael, Ph.D., R. Jamison and Betty Williams Professor of Otolaryngology and Max S. Wicha, M.D., distinguished professor of Oncology.
Abstracts are also being accepted for poster presentations of original research involving stem cells. Abstracts of research in basic science, curriculum innovation, clinical outcomes, health services, policy and methodology are welcome. We encourage abstracts describing current works in progress as well as completed studies. There will be three prizes for best abstract presentations: $250, $100 and $75. Criteria will be originality of concept, sophistication of methodology and clarity of presentation. The Mott/Simpson Circle Dr. (M22) Parking Structure is scheduled to undergo brick and concrete repair starting on Friday, Oct. 3.
The first phase will necessitate the closure of four parking spaces on each of the Levels four - eight, a total of 20 spaces. The structure's East entrance/exit lanes are scheduled to be closed from 8 a.m. to approximately 5 p.m. Monday - Friday during the project. Staff will have to use the South entrance/exit lanes during these hours.

The Bedside Music program of free live music for Health System patients and their families is now available on CareLink. In addition, you can make a request for a bedside musician by following the Bedside Music links on the Tools for Practice Nursing page or the Clinical Resources section of the Clinical home page.
Live music has been proven to promote relaxation and a feeling of well being in patients as well as offering a pleasant distraction from the hospital environment. Patients who may benefit from a musical visit may be anxious, in pain, transitioning or bored, to name a few. Bedside music is available in University Hospital, C. S. Mott, and the Cardiovascular Center, from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday - Friday. |

Each month, a GOOD CHOICE item is selected and sold at a reduced price of 60 cents. October's GOOD CHOICE of the Month vending machine item is the Fig Newtons. It's a perfect opportunity to try something new!
Michigan Healthy Community's GOOD CHOICE program has selected dozens of healthier food and beverage items, each identified with the GOOD CHOICE logo. MFit nutrition guidelines for fat, sugar, sodium, cholesterol and fiber are used to determine healthier choices in vending machines, at participating dining locations and through U-M Catering.

The Employee Assistance Program will offer free, anonymous screenings for depression, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder during National Depression Screening Day from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, in room D2101, Medical Professional Building. We also will provide the opportunity to self-test, talk with a mental health professional, and assess suicide risk of friends or family members. Referral to treatment services will be provided. |

More than 60 teams from units across the Health System will display process improvement storyboards in the Towsley lobby Oct. 7-8. The storyboards demonstrate how process improvement is a journey with a specific destination, as well as many lessons learned along the way.
Storyboards will be on display Tuesday, Oct. 7, from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Wednesday, Oct. 8, from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. Team members will be available 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, to talk about their work and answer questions.
