Artwork donations needed for Pathology Charity Online Art Auction
  Donations of artwork are needed for the Department of Pathology's Third Annual Online Art Auction. This eBay-style auction will take place Oct. 3 through Oct. 13. All money raised will support patient families this holiday season. Last year, combined efforts raised $32,000 to support 32 families. We need your help to make this event a success!

Consider donating your original art works in any media. The deadline for donations is Thursday, Sept. 25. If you have any questions or would like to make arrangements to deliver a donation, call Elizabeth Walker at 734-763-6656 or e-mail ehorn@umich.edu.

U-M Health System named one of 2008 'Most Wired' and 'Most Wireless'
  At the Health System, information technology continues to play an increasing role to enhance the delivery of patient care, research and education. According to a study released this week in the July issue of Hospitals & Health Networks magazine, UMHS has been named to the nation's Most Wired and the Most Wireless hospitals and health systems.

Register for continuing ed course: Social work practice with adults
  The Institute for Human Adjustment is pleased to offer a new continuing education course for intermediate-to-advanced post MSW students from 5:45 - 8:15 p.m. each Wednesday from Sept. 24 - Nov. 12.

The course, "Contemporary Social Work Practice with Adults," offers social workers the opportunity to deepen their clinical skills and explore issues working in clinics or in private practice with adults. Topics include an exploration of new issues for clinicians in the mental health field, overview of assessment issues, discussion of therapeutic orientation and modality, case-based teaching, and termination issues.

The Institute for Human Adjustment is approved by the Association of Social Work Boards through the Approved Continuing Education program. The fee of $425 for this course includes the eight week comprehensive course along with a participant course pack.

A different kind of kindergarten program
  The U-M Children's Center kindergarten is accepting applications for September 2008. Emphasizing curiosity, problem-solving and creative thinking, the program's small class size, elementary-certified teaching staff and high level of child/teacher/parent interaction make this an excellent adjunct or alternative to other kindergarten programs. The U-M Children's Center is located at 400 North Ingalls Building. Program hours are Monday - Friday from 8:30 -11:45 a.m. A full day program option is also available.

Integrative Medicine seed grant available
  The Department of Family Medicine invites seed grant applications to stimulate outcome-based research in integrative medicine and complementary alternative therapies for children and adults with mental health challenges. This is an internal funding opportunity specifically designed to support initiation of new and innovative research projects that will lead to extramural funding in this arena. Applications from all academic disciplines are welcome. Preference will be given to applications that include collaborators from more than one discipline and/or include community-based complementary health practitioners. The grant application deadline is Sept. 26.

U-M Children's Center preschool openings
  The U-M Children's Center located at 400 North Ingalls has openings available beginning September 2008 for a preschool session that meets:
  • 1 - 4:15 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday
  • 1 - 4:15 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday
  • 1 - 4:15 p.m. Monday and Friday

Medicinal Chemistry Core Synthesis Laboratory announces cost sharing program
  The U-M Medicinal Chemistry Core Synthesis Laboratory announces the roll-out of a cost sharing program for the synthesis of drug-like molecules and diagnostic probes. The intent is to provide a subsidy for U-M investigators who do not have adequate funds to redirect to synthesis projects. Although funds are available for all synthesis projects, priority will be given to those projects that offer the potential for inclusion of the Medicinal Chemistry Core Synthesis Laboratory on future related grant proposals, either as a core facility or as a co-PI laboratory. Investigators following up on high-throughput screening campaigns are especially encouraged to apply. Financial assistance may be provided for any or all of the following: synthesis, supplies, consulting. For more information, follow this link.

July 29: Retirement reception for Nancy Roth, R.N.
  Nancy Roth, Level C Nurse, is retiring from the Health System after 22 years of service. Nancy has worked in a variety of nursing positions including Mott Pediatric Unit, UH Operating Rooms, and East Ann Arbor Surgery Center. In the main OR, Nancy worked on the orthopedic, vascular, and transplant services. Nancy also valued her role in the establishment of the East Ann Arbor Surgery Center!

One of Nancy's greatest strengths is in being a mentor for both seasoned and new nurses. Nancy demonstrates a genuine compassion and love for her patients and co-workers. She is valued and respected by colleagues for her excellent patient care! Nursing has been an integral part of Nancy's life since she was a young girl!

A reception in Nancy's honor will take place from 3 - 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, at the East Ann Arbor Surgery Center, 4270 Plymouth Road. Please join us in congratulating Nancy for her many years of service!

Aug. 10: Amster Lupus Butterfly Walk
  The Amster Lupus Butterfly Walk is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 10, at the Civic Center Park in Woodhaven. Since 2001, the Amster Lupus Butterfly Walk has raised more than $120,000 for Lupus clinical research, education and awareness. All funds raised will support Lupus Research at U-M.

Registration is $15 per person or $50 per family of four. For more information or to register, visit the Web site below.

The Herbert and Carol Amster Lupus Research Fund was established in 1983 to help U-M pursue important advances in the treatment of Lupus and is helping to bring advances to patients.

July 29: Farewell reception for Jayne Thorson, Ph.D.
  Jayne Thorson, Ph.D., assistant dean for Faculty Services and Research Faculty, retired from the University of Michigan on July 1, after 21 years of service. During her 14 years in the Office of Faculty Affairs, Thorson was very involved in leadership development and the advancement of women faculty and was the recipient of the Sarah Goddard Power Award for outstanding contributions to the betterment of the status of women.

In honor of her many years of dedicated service, a reception will take place from 4 - 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, in the Towsley Lobby. Remarks will be made at 5 p.m. Please join us in honoring Thorson's many accomplishments and in wishing her well in her future endeavors.

July 26: Trail's Edge Camp Benefit Bowl-a-Thon and Raffle
  Come on out and help support a summer camp for ventilator dependent children at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at Colonial Lanes, 1950 South Industrial Highway, Ann Arbor. This non-smoking bowl-a-thon is a three-game, nine-pin, tap, glow bowl with prizes. The cost is $20 per person and all proceeds go to the Trail's Edge Camp.

July 25: Internal Medicine Grand Rounds
  Vikas Parekh, M.D., and Reena Salgia, M.D., will present Internal Medicine Grand Rounds at noon, Friday, July 25, in Ford Auditorium. Their topic will be "Morbidity and Mortality." Parekh is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Internal Medicine. He is the assistant director of the Hospitalist Program and is an associate program director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program. Salgia is a 2008-2009 Internal Medicine chief medical resident.

July 29 and 31: Code F Drills (fire drills) scheduled for Cardiovascular Center
  Building-wide Code F Drills (fire drills) will be conducted at 6 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, and 10 a.m. Thursday, July 31, in the Cardiovascular Center. Drills will be initiated by public address system announcements and audible fire alarms. All departments and units within Cardiovascular Center are expected to respond using their fire instruction cards and by completing an online critique form. Aug. 4: Head Injury and Concussion Symposium
  The U-M Bone and Joint Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation Center will host a free one-day international symposium on head injuries and concussion beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4, in the Michigan League. The key learning objectives include the provision of state-of-the-art basic and clinic research related to head injury and concussion. Topics related to these objectives include: prevention, mechanisms, modeling, treatment, post-injury therapeutics and rehabilitation. Three internationally renowned leaders in the field will give keynote presentations.

  The Joint Commission is presenting a broadcast on "Infection Control: Prevention Through Good Practice," from 1:30 - 3 p.m. Thursday, July 24, in Ford Auditorium. The objectives of the program are to:
  • Discuss the National Patient Safety Goal related to reducing the risk of health care-associated infections
  • Describe the impact of health care-associated infections on patient mortality, organization resources and the delivery of care
  • Identify methods to reduce or prevent the transmission of infection

Aug. 21: U-M Skilled Trades Union Scholarship Fund raffle
  The U-M Skilled Trades Union will hold a raffle for two season tickets to U-M home football games. Raffle tickets are now available for $20 each through Thursday, Aug. 14.
