U-M hospitals rank among nation's finest in two surveys
Ann Arbor, Mich. – The University of Michigan’s hospitals have been ranked by two newly released major national surveys as among the top health care institutions in the United States – and U-M is the only Michigan hospital to make both lists.
Both the Consumers’ Checkbook ranking, published last week by
AARP The Magazine, and the Thomson/Reuters
Top 100 Hospitals ranking, published this week in
Modern Healthcare, cite U-M’s Hospitals and Health Centers for high-quality care.
Consumers’ Checkbook, in conjunction with AARP The Magazine, named the U-M Hospitals and Health Centers to the list of America’s Top 125 Hospitals. Consumers’ Checkbook surveyed doctors from across the country and collected 140,000 ratings of hospitals in the doctors’ own communities.
This survey was part of the research for a new book from Consumers’ Checkbook called Consumers’ Guide to Hospitals, which uses government safety statistics and data on death and complication rates, along with survey results, to compare and rank hospitals in the country’s 53 largest metro areas.
U-M was also ranked by Thomson/Reuters as one of the 100 Top Hospitals in the U.S. The study, which has been conducted periodically since 1993, ranks hospitals based on their overall organizational performance. U-M Hospital and Health Centers is named as a major teaching hospital. This is the fifth consecutive time, and the sixth time overall, that U-M has been named to the list. Only two other major teaching hospitals in the country have succeeded in making the list so many times in a row.
“We strive to create and support an environment where everyone has the information and resources they need to ensure safe, coordinated and optimal patient care,” says Doug Strong, director & chief executive officer of the U-M Hospitals and Health Centers, which is part of the U-M Health System. “The entire UMHS community is proud to receive these honors, as they reflect well on our commitment to maintaining and restoring health, and to bettering ourselves and the community each day.”
It’s not the first recognition for UMHS from AARP’s magazine, which is aimed at Americans over age 50 and is the world’s largest-circulation magazine, with more than 34 million readers nationwide.
In July 2008, the
magazine named Ann Arbor the No. 1 healthiest city in which to live and retire. Ann Arbor – where 86 percent of the residents get regular exercise and there are 580 physicians per 100,000 people – was chosen for many different reasons, but chief among them the fact that the city is a center of medical innovation.
Other rankings have also placed U-M’s patient care among the country’s finest. In recent years, UMHHC has received a number of top-quality honors from groups including U.S.News & World Report magazine, the Leapfrog Group and the American Hospital Association.
