2 from U-M elected to Institute of Medicine

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Two University of Michigan faculty members have been elected to the Institute of Medicine, one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine.
The two are:
- Arul Chinnaiyan, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Michigan Center for Translational Pathology and S.P. Hicks Professor of Pathology at the U-M Medical School
- Ana Diez Roux, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., professor of epidemiology, director of the Center for Integrative Approaches to Health Disparities, and associate director of the Center for Social Epidemiology and Population Health at the U-M School of Public Health
The IOM recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service. Chinnaiyan and Diez Roux are among 65 new members. Altogether, the IOM has 1,778 members.
The centerpiece of Chinnaiyan’s work is the finding that genes relocate, which can lead to them fusing together. This is believed to be the “on switch” that causes cancer to develop. His work has focused on prostate cancer but has implications for other cancer types as well. Chinnaiyan is also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, an American Cancer Society Research Professor and a member of the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Diez Roux is an epidemiologist whose work has focused on the examination of the social determinants of health, and she has been an international leader in the social epidemiology of cardiovascular disease, the application of multilevel analysis in epidemiology, and the investigation of neighborhood health effects.

"Each of these new members stands out as a professional whose research, knowledge, and skills have significantly advanced health and medicine and who has served as a model for others. The Institute of Medicine is greatly enriched by the addition of our newly elected colleagues."
