UMHS has recently been named a top employer by two different metropolitan Detroit-area surveys. Recently, UMHS was named one of metro Detroit’s “101 Best and Brightest Companies to Work For”.
On Sunday, it was named among the best large companies in the entire state of Michigan, in the Detroit Free Press list of “Top Workplaces 2010”. UMHS is among 105 workplaces of any size chosen for the list, out of 950 that were nominated.
The two repeat honors come at a time when the Health System is hiring patient care staff and others to fuel its growth -- including the opening of a new home for C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital in late 2011.
The 101 metro Detroit companies on the first list were recently honored by the Michigan Business and Professional Association at a symposium and awards luncheon. A similar event to honor the Free Press Top Workplaces will be held in November.
The selection of the winning companies is based on an independent analysis of employee surveys that ask about companies’ communication, community initiatives, compensation and benefits, diversity and multiculturalism, employee education and development, employee engagement and commitment, recognition and retention, small business, recruitment and selection, and work-life balance.
For the Detroit Free Press “Top Workplaces” competition, UMHS was evaluated on the basis of its employees’ survey responses to 21 different questions, tallied by Workplace Dynamics, Inc.
As one of the country's top institutions in clinical care, biomedical research and medical and health education, UMHS is a premiere health care system focused on creating the future of medicine. With over 19,000 staff and 2,700 faculty, the Health System includes the U-M Hospitals and Health Centers, the University of Michigan Medical School and its Faculty Group Practice, the clinical activities of the University of Michigan School of Nursing and the Michigan Health Corp. - the legal entity that allows the Health System to enter into partnerships, affiliations, joint ventures and other business activities.
UMHS is a part of the University of Michigan, one of the nation’s foremost public universities and home to an array of health sciences schools that complement UMHS. The Health System is composed of a diverse group of individuals and operates with the belief that each person brings a unique set of attributes, beliefs and experiences to the workplace that enhances its ability to serve a diverse patient population, think creatively and work together in new and effective ways.
