Michigan Visiting Care announces flu shot clinics

Football Saturdays and fall foliage mean a change of season – and the start of flu season.

Beginning Wednesday, the University of Michigan Health System’s Michigan Visiting Care will offer a series of flu shot clinics.

“The best time to be vaccinated is October through December before the season peaks,” said Tracy Newhouse, MVN Community Wellness Manager. “Hand washing and avoiding people who are sick are important steps to preventing the flu, but the best protection is getting a flu shot every year.”

Anyone can get the flu, but children have the highest rate of infection and the elderly are most likely to suffer complications and death.

Unlike years when there were shortages, an estimated 143 million to 145 million doses of vaccine will be available. The supply is at an all-time high, meaning there are plenty of chances to be vaccinated.

Vaccination costs are competitively priced. Michigan Visiting Care accepts Blue Care Network, including Premier Care, Health Alliance Plan, Medicare Part B and Priority Health HMO, all of which cover the entire cost of the flu shot. Other payment options include cash, check and credit card.

The clinics are open to the public and most clinics are limited to vaccinating those age 9 and older. For a weekly listing of flu clinics, call MVN’s flu hotline at 734-477-7299, or visit www.umvn.org.

Clinics are scheduled on the following dates:
