Event celebrates milestone for hospital building project

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Michigan Health System will soon mark another major milestone for the new C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Women’s Hospital building project: Completion of the facility’s structural steel.

 To celebrate, a beam signing event will be held at noon on Wednesday, Oct. 29 on the roof of Taubman Parking Structure A, next to the building’s construction site on the U-M medical campus. Media are invited to attend.
 
The 1.1 million-square-foot building project includes 12,906 pieces of structural steel, which make up the 12-story inpatient tower and the nine-story clinic tower. At the event, guests will have the opportunity to add their name to two of these beams, painted maize for the special event.

Last week, U-M Regents approved a plan to enhance the scope and budget for the building project, allowing it to meet future demand for patient care services and accommodate new medical technology.
 
This plan will build out the majority of shelled space within the new facility, and add 84 private patient beds, two magnetic resonance imaging units, an operating room and an inter-operative MRI-OR suite. Plus, unfinished shell space will still remain for possible future growth in emergency medicine, radiology and surgery.
 
The facility, designed by HKS Architects, is set to open in 2012. Already, UMHS has raised more than $50 million of its $75 million fund-raising goal for the new facility.
