Headache

Suggested Pre-Referral Evaluation and Management Guidelines
Consider the following clinical scenarios:
1)Medication Overuse Headache Syndrome (OTCs, opioids, barbituates, benzodiazepines)
2)Caffeine overuse
3)Systemic etiologies (Uncontrolled HTN, rheumatologic illness, celiac disease, food sensitivities, allergy)
4)New medications (vasodilators, stimulants)
5)Obstructive Sleep Apnea
6)Vision changes
7)Immunosuppression
Vitamin Deficiency (vitamin B12, Vitamin D)
Suggested Additional Test/Management Prior to Specialty Visit Consider MRI Brain, especially for new onset headache, abnormal clinical exam, or atypical features of headache.
Consider Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, ANA titer, TSH and Free T4
Consider ESR for new HA in elderly.
Consider acute treatment (sumatriptan, rizatriptan) and/or preventive therapy (topiramate, propranolol)
Patient Education/Information (includes preps)
1) Counsel about regular eating and sleep habits, handling stress, and eye exams.
2) Headaches
3) Migraine Headache
4) Tension Headache
