Epilepsy Surgery
Suggested Pre-Referral Evaluation and Management Guidelines Partial seizures (loss of awareness, automatic behavior) not completely controlled with medical therapy.
Seizures related to a known brain abnormality (e.g. tumor, cyst, vascular malformation)
Suggested Additional Test/Management Prior to Specialty Visit Obtain witnessed description of event, check anticonvulsant levels, CBC and SGOT/SGPT.
Patient Education/Information (includes preps)
1)Avoid sleep deprivation and alcohol, counsel about compliance, no driving 6 months after a seizure
2)Seizures
Appointment Timeframe For newly-discovered brain abnormalities (e.g. tumor), appointment should be made within 1-2 weeks.
For uncontrolled partial seizures, patient will be seen at next available epilepsy surgery program clinic (usually within 4-6 weeks).
