Ankle Sprain

Suggested Pre-Referral Evaluation and Management Guidelines
1)X-rays ankle and foot with weight
2)If no fracture - then ankle stirrup orthosis (ASO) or controlled ankle motion (CAM) walker for 2 to 4 weeks
3)PT for ankle sprain protocol as soon as possible, patient tolerance permitting.
4)Convert to ankle stirrup orthosis (AS0) as soon as possible, patient tolerance permitting.
Suggested Additional Test/Management Prior to Specialty Visit
1)If pain with weight bearing in boot, then keep patient non-weight-bearing initially.
2)MRI may be needed but not until at least 6 weeks after injury.
Patient Education/Information (includes preps)
1)Over 90% ankle sprains resolve with appropriate non-operative care.
2)PT is essential to recovery
3)Recurrent sprains may require surgery
