CONSULT REQUEST GUIDELINES
Suggested Pre-Referral Evaluation and Management Guidelines
X-rays ankle and foot with weight
If no fracture - then ankle stirrup orthosis (ASO) or controlled ankle motion (CAM) walker for 2 to 4 weeks
PT for ankle sprain protocol as soon as possible, patient tolerance permitting.
Convert to ankle stirrup orthosis (AS0) as soon as possible, patient tolerance permitting.
Suggested Additional Test/Management Prior to Specialty Visit
If pain with weight bearing in boot, then keep patient non-weight-bearing initially.
MRI may be needed but not until at least 6 weeks after injury.
Patient Education/Information (includes preps)
Over 90% ankle sprains resolve with appropriate non-operative care.
PT is essential to recovery
Recurrent sprains may require surgery
Within 2 weeks
