Anal Cancer, including anal canal cancer in situ (Bowen’s disease), squamous cell cancer of anal canal, squamous cancer of perianal skin, verrucous cancer

Referral is indicated if the patient has a suspicious anal skin lesion (firm, enlarging, exophytic, ulcerated, bleeding, non-healing)

Confirmatory biopsy is preferred.

If biopsy results are outside of the UMHS system, pathology report should be faxed and pathology slides should be mailed for confirmatory review by our pathologists.
Suggested Additional Test/Management Prior to Specialty Visit Screening colonoscopy is suggested if patient is >50 years or at high risk. Need not be done prior to visit.
If pathology is invasive anal cancer, CT with oral and IV contrast of chest, abdomen and pelvis will be needed. Reports of any testing performed outside of the UMHS system and radiologic images on CD should be available for review at or before the time of the clinic visit. Receiving these prior to the clinic visit is preferable.
