Primary Hyperparathyroidism

Suggested Pre-Referral Evaluation and Management Guidelines

Referral is indicated if:

Patient has elevated serum calcium and PTH levels, or inappropriate non-suppression of PTH calcium elevation.

Vitamin D deficiency should be excluded

Suggested Additional Test/Management Prior to Specialty Visit Simultaneous PTH and Calcium determination if not already done. Sestamibi (parathyroid) scan
25 Hydroxy Vitamin D levels
24 hour urine calcium
DEXA Bone Density Scan

Parathyroid ultrasound will be done by Endocrine Surgery at time of clinic visit. If sestamibi scan not done, this may be arranged at clinic visit.
Patient Education/Information (includes preps) OK to continue moderate calcium intake (e.g., 1250 mg of Calcium carbonate with or without Vitamin D).
