Diverticulitis
Suggested Pre-Referral Evaluation and Management Guidelines
Referral is indicated if patient has had:
- more than three episodes of proven acute diverticulitis
- one episode of complicated diverticulitis (i.e., with evidence of abscess, microperforation, or obstruction)
- Complications of diverticulitis such as stricture, colovesical fistula, or colovaginal fistula
Suggested Additional Test/Management Prior to Specialty Visit

Colonoscopy within the past year to rule out neoplasia.
(Colonoscopy, if not done, should be deferred until more than 6 weeks after resolution of acute episode)

Barium enema (if no acute disease within 6 weeks) to evaluate extent and severity of diverticulosis, especially if patient has suspected colovesical or colovaginal fistula.
