CONSULT REQUEST GUIDELINES
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
Suggested Pre-Referral Evaluation and Management Guidelines
If Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm is suspected, consider a referral for an aneurysm that has one or more of these characteristics:
Measures more than 4.0 cm.
Is more than twice the size of a patient's normal aorta
Growth over a short period of time is significant (>0.5 cm/6 months)
Symptoms are evident (back or abdominal pain)
If none of the above characteristics are evident, consider a repeat US in 6 months to monitor patient, or a referral to Vascular Surgery.
Suggested Additional Test/Management Prior to Specialty Visit
Abdominal ultrasound scan
CT (Aortic Protocol)
If > 5.0cm - Consider chemical stress test for pre-operative evaluation
Risk Factor Modification:
- Statin Therapy
- Smoking Cessation
- Beta Blocker
- Lower Blood Pressure
Patient Education/Information (includes preps)
Abdominal Aortic Disease
Next available appointment, particularly if significant disease is present.

If the aneurysm is greater than 6.5 cm, it should be seen within 1 week
