Urinary Retention
Suggested Pre-Referral Evaluation and Management Guidelines
1)Teach Clean Intermittent Catheterization (CIC) every 4-6 hours to keep bladder volumes less than 400 cc
2)If patient/ caregiver unable to perform CIC: place Foley catheter to relieve retention
Suggested Additional Test/Management Prior to Specialty Visit
1)Urinalysis and urine culture with sensitivities to confirm absence of infection
2)Renal ultrasound
3)Serum BUN and creatinine
Patient Education/Information (includes preps) Preps:
Frequency Volume Chart
Incontinence Protection Pad Weight Test
Appointment Timeframe Within 1-2 weeks
