Diabetes-Hypoglycemia: Diabetes Insipidus
Suggested Pre-Referral Evaluation and Management Guidelines Criteria for referral
  • History of frequent urination and excessive urine volume (>2.5 liters/day)
Do not refer:
  • Patients with frequent, small volume urination
Suggested Additional Test/Management Prior to Specialty Visit

Please obtain the following tests:

  • FASTING Basic Metabolic Panel: BASIC (LAB15)
  • Osmolality, Serum (fasting) (LAB107)
  • Osmolality, Urine (fasting) (LAB420)
  • Urinalysis, UA (LAB348)
Patient Education/Information (includes preps) Diabetes Insipidus
Appointment Timeframe If the patient is pregnant, symptomatic with A1c>11%, had a recent ketoacidosis and/or had a recent hospitalization related to diabetes, request expedited appointment.

If glucose is documented <50 mg% (and the patient does not have diabetes mellitus), request expedited evaluation, generally 1-3 weeks.

External Patients: Hard copies of abnormal test results, ultrasounds, CT scans and MRI's that support the suspected diagnosis are required in order for a patient to be seen. Please fax these, along with the MEND Outpatient Consult Request Form, to: 734-998-1438.

If you are unable to fax information, the patient can hand carry non-UM records to the visit.
