Hypoglycemia
Suggested Pre-Referral Evaluation and Management Guidelines Criteria for referral to MEND
  • Documentation of hypoglycemia (generally glucose<50 mg%). Patients with very convincing history and/or clinical history consistent with hypoglycemia and high risk for true hypoglycemia (personal or family member with MEN-1, history of bariatric surgery, history of gastric surgery) will be seen
Do not refer
  • Patients with postprandial "hypoglycemia" unless documented low glucose
  • Patients who complain of "hypoglycemia" without documented low glucose
Suggested Additional Test/Management Prior to Specialty Visit If possible, referring physician should try and obtain plasma insulin, C-peptide, pro-insulin, and blood or urine hypoglycemic agent screen (sulfonylurea and others) at time of documented hypoglycemia (glucose<50 mg%)
Patient Education/Information (includes preps) http://www.med.umich.edu/1libr/MEND/Diabetes-Hypoglycemia.pdf
