Diabetes-Hypoglycemia: Hypoglycemia
Suggested Pre-Referral Evaluation and Management Guidelines Criteria for referral to MEND
  • Documentation of hypoglycemia (generally glucose<50 mg%). Patients with very convincing history and/or clinical history consistent with hypoglycemia and high risk for true hypoglycemia (personal or family member with MEN-1, history of bariatric surgery, history of gastric surgery) will be seen
Do not refer
  • Patients with postprandial "hypoglycemia" unless documented low glucose
  • Patients who complain of "hypoglycemia" without documented low glucose
Suggested Additional Test/Management Prior to Specialty Visit

Please obtain the following tests at time of documented hypoglycemia (glucose<50mg%):

  • Plasma insulin concurrent with glucose
    • Insulin, INS (LAB575)
    • Glucose (LAB82)
  • C-Peptide (LAB521)
  • Proinsulin, PROIN (LAB1086)
  • Hypoglycemic agent screen (serum), HYPOG (LAB3333)
Patient Education/Information (includes preps)
Appointment Timeframe Routine. If expedited referral needed, referring physician should explain reason for request.

If glucose is documented <50 mg% (and the patient does not have diabetes mellitus), request expedited evaluation, generally 1-3 weeks.
