Suggested Pre-Referral Evaluation and Management Guidelines
Consider the following possibilities:
1)
Hormonal changes (e.g., recent OCPs, pregnancy)
2)
Caffeine or analgesic overuse
3)
Uncontrolled HTN
4)
New medications (vasodilators, stimulants)
5)
Obstructive Sleep Apnea
6)
Vision changes
7)
Immunosuppression
Suggested Additional Test/Management Prior to Specialty Visit
Treat with at least one abortive and prophylactic medication, and consider treatment of any relevant conditions. Consider CT, or MRA/V if headaches are severe and new in last several months.
Check WESR and CRP for new HA in elderly.
Patient Education/Information (includes preps)
1)
Counsel about regular eating and sleep habits, handling stress, and eye exams.
