for Ankle Sprain
Ankle Sprain
Suggested Pre-Referral Evaluation and Management Guidelines
1)
X-rays ankle and foot with weight
2)
If no fracture - then controlled ankle motion (CAM) walker for 4 weeks
3)
PT for ankle sprain protocol after 4 weeks
4)
Convert to ankle stirrup orthosis (AS0) at 4 weeks
Suggested Additional Test/Management Prior to Specialty Visit
1)
If pain with weight bearing in boot, then keep patient non-weight-bearing for 6 weeks
2)
MRI to evaluate for osteochondral defect
Do not perform prior to 6 weeks from date of injury.
Patient Education/Information (includes preps)
1)
Over 90% ankle sprains resolve with appropriate non-operative care.
2)
PT is essential to recovery
3)
Recurrent sprains may require surgery
