Midline Neck Mass/Suspected
Suggested Pre-Referral Evaluation and Management Guidelines
1)Consider trial of oral antibiotics if inflammatory neck mass suspected.
2)Immediate referral if symptoms of airway distress or suspicion of abscess formation.
Suggested Additional Test/Management Prior to Specialty Visit
1)Thyroid ultrasound should be performed if it is believed that the mass is associated with thyroid gland.
2)Thyroid function tests and a nuclear thyroid scan are optional. if it is suspected that the mass is associated with the thyroid gland.
3)CBC with differential; Mono test if age and symptoms suggest infectious mononucleosis.
Patient Education/Information (includes preps)  
Appointment Timeframe Next Available Appointment unless there is airway compromise, unless an abscess is suspected, or if some other urgent or emergent issue is present. Contact an attending physician is there is a question as to the urgency
